The centre for humanities, Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Lyon/Saint-Etienne (MSH-LSE)

The centre for humanities, Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Lyon/Saint-Etienne (MSH-LSE) is in charge of the structuring process of human and social sciences for the Lyon-Saint Etienne agglomeration of universities and higher education institutions, with a scope extending to the more than 50 research laboratories. The center for humanities is supervised by the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), the Université Lumière Lyon 2, the Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3, the ENS de Lyon, the Université Jean Monnet Saint-Etienne, the IEP de Lyon and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1.

Research Federations

Jean Pouilloux Centre of the East and the Mediterranean 

The Jean Pouilloux Centre of the East and the Mediterranean (fr. Maison de l’Orient et de la Méditerranée Jean Pouilloux or FR MOM) brings together four research laboratories dedicated to the study of all aspects of ancient societies, from prehistory to the medieval world, in the Near- and Middle East, the Mediterranean and the metropolitan territory. It has six common research support services and seven technology platforms.

Institute for the Study of Religions and Secularism

The ISERL (fr. Institut Supérieur d’Étude des Religions et de la Laïcité or FED ISERL) conducts the analysis of religious phenomena and secularism from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective. It federates a dozen teams of researchers or teacher-researchers from the universities Lyon 2, Lyon 3, Saint-Étienne, ENS... It emphasizes interdisciplinarity, bringing together historians, philosophers, literary specialists, anthropologists, jurists...

Lyon Federation of Numerical Modelling and Sciences 

The Lyon Federation of Numerical Modelling and Sciences (fr. Fédération Lyonnaise de Modélisation et Sciences Numériques or FR FLMSN) is a federative structure recognized by the Ministry and the CNRS, whose purpose is to federate and support HPC and modelling activities in the Lyon region.

Urban Hydrological Field Observation Research Laboratory

The Urban Hydrological Field Observation Research Laboratory (fr. Observatoire de Terrain en Hydrologie Urbaine or FED OTHU) is a laboratory without walls, this field- observation research federation studies urban waste and its effect on impacted environments - particularly in rainy weather - in the Lyon region, and proposes new solutions for sanitation design and management.

Computing Federation of Lyon

The FIL (fr. Fédération informatique de Lyon or FR FIL) aims to promote scientific exchange and joint actions and to reinforce the visibility of the computer science discipline in Lyon.

Agorantic - Culture, Heritage, Digital Societies

(fr. Agorantic-Culture, Patrimoines, Sociétés numériques or FR Agorantic)
The main objective of this federation is to study the societal issues related to the development of digital technology.

Federative Research Structure for Education Research of Lyon-Saint-Étienne

The RELYS (fr. Structure fédérative de recherche - Recherches en éducation Lyon-Saint-Étienne or SFR RELYS) aims to promote exchanges between laboratories, institutions and associated structures for the development of multi-disciplinary research projects with the common purpose of “to learn” and “to teach”.

Religions & Religious Practices, Texts and Powers

(fr. GIS Religions, Pratiques, Textes, Pouvoirs)
Led by the University Lumière Lyon 2, this group aims to structure and network research on religions and secularism.

Institute of the Americas

The Institute of the Americas (fr. GIS Institut des Amériques) federates French studies in the fields of humanities and social sciences as they pertain to the American continent. Its network-based structure brings together educators, researchers, scientific information professionals, and non-academic partners from economic, political and media areas.

Gender Institute

(fr. GIS Institut du Genre)
Based on joint research of units and teams explicitly involved in gender research, the Gender Institute is a place of coordination, reference and reception for French research on gender and sexuality.

Rhône-Alpin Institute of Complex Systems - IXXI

(fr. GIS Institut Rhône-Alpin des systèmes complexes – IXXI)
The IXXI research structure aims to promote research, at the crossroads of disciplines that respond to major contemporary issues. Networks are at the heart of the current concerns of IXXI, from the science of networking to the impact of the digital revolution on the economy or the organization of society.

Middle East and Muslim Worlds

(fr. GIS Moyen-Orient et mondes musulmans)
A GIS whose vocation is to federate all French research teams working on avenues of research into the Middle East and Muslim Worlds, in all related disciplines (istory, geography, political science, sociology, anthropology, history of art, literature, islamology, and philosophy).


(fr. GIS Humanités)
The GIS Humanités brings together philologists, historians, philosophers, archaeologists and musicologists interested in the roots and ancient languages of Mediterranean Europe, their transmission and reception, whether or not the sources of study are objects, documents, monuments, or narratives.


(fr. GIS INTEROP Grande Région)
Its objective is to develop networked research, with a critical view in the field of enterprise interoperability.

Rhône Basin Area Workshop

(fr. GIS Zone Atelier Bassin du Rhône or ZABR)
ZABR brings together 24 research institutionsto address, through different disciplines, the interactions between the fluvial and peri-fluvial environments of the Rhône and the societies that develop in the surrounding area.

Group for the Study of Labour and Poor Working Conditions

(fr. GIS Groupe d’Études Sur le Travail et la Souffrance au travail or Gestes)
Gestes focuses on a central subject: labour. It encourages the development of a proper network dedicated to Human and Social Sciences.

Layout and Analysis of Occupational Health

(fr. GIS oAges, Territoires, Liens et Agencements en Santé-Travail or ATLAST)
ATLAST’s purpose is the collaborative use of of localized statistical data mapping for the characterisation of working conditions and the prevention of occupational risks in specific territories.

Institute of the History of Books

(fr. GIS Institut Histoire du livre or IHL)
IHL brings together a number of institutions having a tradition of excellence in the field of books and writing.

CIERA - Interdisciplinary Centre of Studies and Research on Germany

(fr. GIP Centre Interdisciplinaire d’études et de Recherches sur l’Allemagne or CIERA)
The CIERA is a network of institutions, researchers, students and doctoral students working in connection with Germany or in the Franco-German field.
