From March 11 to 13, all the members of the BAUHAUS4EU Alliance met at Bauhaus University Weimar, Germany. The 10 partner institutions came together to launch the project for a European university sharing fundamental values: innovation, sustainability and inclusivity.

The BAUHAUS4EU European University aims to create a common European campus and research and education community for its 124,000 students and 10,000 staff. The project that supports this Alliance will run for 4 years. It will enable us to work on a number of areas: the transformation of campuses to make them greener and more inclusive, student entrepreneurship, innovation in learning methods, and the development of regional innovation hubs...

The program

The kick-off started with a speech by the President of Bauhaus-Universität-Weimar, Prof. Peter Benz, who highlighted the Alliance's main focuses: the development of intercultural skills, expertise in sustainability and awareness of regional characteristics.

The President gave the microphone to other key figures in the Alliance : Professor Maurizio Tira (member of the European University Association), Solène Gautron (New European Bauhaus Project Manager at the European Commission) and Ana Sofia Countinho (Project Manager at the European Executive Agency for Education and Culture - EACEA) shared their visions of the future of European universities, and reminded us of BAUHAUS4EU's role in innovating the European education landscape.

Dr. Tonia Schmitz, Secretary General of BAUHAUS4EU at Bauhaus University-Weimar, emphasized the importance of kindness, joy and happiness in future professional and human exchanges within the Alliance.

After the opening ceremony, the contributors to the 11 work packages discussed their deliverables and timetable. Université Lumière Lyon 2 is responsible for Work Package 9, which will work on the green and inclusive transformation of campuses, but is also actively participating in all the other working groups.
Since January 2025, a group of colleagues from our university has been working with the partner universities to make regular progress on the various aspects of the project.

Once the group meetings were over, the participants had the opportunity to explore the city of Weimar, the headquarters of the Alliance's coordinating university and one of Germany's major cultural centers, with several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Culture point: Bauhaus is a German school of design, architecture and decorative arts founded in the 1920s. It is distinguished by its pure forms, geometric lines and minimalist approach, which still have a strong influence on contemporary design. The Bauhaus University-Weimar building is a fine example of the Bauhaus architectural style
